My first real "photo session" attempt.

Here are a few photos from a recent photo session with some friends. I told myself I never wanted to get into portrait photography, but a friend asked me a while back to do some and I actually enjoyed it. This was from my first real formal session this past weekend. I'm still trying to get the hang of all the setting changes that are involved from shot to shot. Landscapes are so much easier. Trees and buildings don't move, and are in no hurry to be anywhere. They just sit there waiting to be photographed. You can take your time, or even go back when the lighting is better. But, I like challenges and portrait photography is a big one to me.

  2. It is a challenge for sure! And so it natural light photography, because from moment to moment the light changes and then so do the settings..plus they are busy moving. My trick is to set my shutter speed the no smaller than the length of the lens..(if lens is 50mm...set no less than 50) I also find the light and use that to my advantage. I think your first attempt is fantastic and you should keep going for it...if you like it. The other tricky thing is getting your subjects to either interact "naturally" with each other or the camera so you can get a shot. That part it still hard for me at times! I love the light you put in her eyes and that you were mindful of the rule of thirds. Great shots!

    1. Thanks. That's a good point about the shutter speed and focal length, but something I tend to forget a lot. Maybe I should put some post-it notes on the back of my camera.
